Love is in the air and romance abounds, but your wedding need not break the bank to be an affair to remember. With weddings averaging $20,000 each, it is a good idea to establish a budget early on during the first planning stages of your wedding and stick to it. Enjoy your wedding even more with these helpful cost-saving tips.

1. Off-Peak
Choose any day but a Saturday for your wedding. Saturdays are the most requested day of the week for weddings. Consider a Friday night or Sunday, as these days are on the weekend and gaining popularity as an alternative date. Select an off-season date at your favorite venue to save money and inquire about discounts.

2. Location
Choose an off-the-beaten-path location like the beach, your parent’s backyard or a community park. This saves on the costs of renting a traditional wedding hall or reserving space at the country club.

3. Wedding Attire
Shop at sample stores or annual sales to save money on your wedding dress, deals and discounts are often available for the diligent bride. Show your sentimental side and wear your mother’s gown. Borrow one from a friend or rent a wedding dress.

4. Cuisine
Instead of a formal dinner, serve your guests brunch, afternoon high tea or a have cocktail reception. Eliminate the sit-down dinner all together and have a large mix and mingle for your guests with lots of appetizers. Consider making your own appetizers. Try serving three courses as an alternative to five courses for dinner.

5. Bar Services
Create a signature cocktail for your wedding and give it a fun name. Having a signature drink saves money because it limits the amount of alcohol used. Another option is to serve beer and wine and offer champagne for toasting. Lastly, serve non-alcoholic beverages such as strawberry lemonade, fruit smoothies or mocha frappes.

6. Wedding Cake
Choose to have a smaller-sized cake, the higher and more layers a cake has the more expense it adds to the budget. Add your own decorative touches such as fresh flowers or lace and ribbons that match your dress.

7. Flowers
Make your own tabletop centerpieces, pew decorations, chair decorations, hair wreaths, corsages, bouquets and boutonnieres. Select locally grown flowers or order flowers in bulk from an online vendor.

8. Decorations
Get your craft box out and make your own wedding favors. The creative possibilities are endless from making cloth favor bags with hand-tied ribbons to creating customized personal photo ornaments.

9. Limit the Guests List
Cut the guest list as much as possible; the math is simple, the less people, the less costs involved. Slimming down the guest list saves on expenses such as invitations, food and centerpieces.

10. Attend a Bridal Show
Attending a bridal show like the Great Bridal Expo, helps save time and gas by having a single location featuring multiple wedding vendors under one roof to answer your questions and help with planning.
