The magic of your wedding is in the details and creating bows for your wedding is one way to add dramatic flair to your day. Accent your wedding decor with beautiful bows that you make yourself by applying a little initiative, planning and hard work; you will achieve an end result of saving money and the satisfaction of knowing you did-it-yourself.

Bows take less time and are easier to make than you might think. Use them to decorate pews, chairs, doors, banisters, staircases, walls, vehicles, gifts, entrance ways, columns or tables.

Bows supplies come in a variety of colors, patterns, widths, styles and materials including silk, satin, sheer, taffeta, metallic, plastic, iridescent fabric, lace, cotton, organza, tulle and velvet. Select hues and tints that match your wedding colors. Wire-edge ribbon tends to hold its shape better than silk ribbon. Read on for simple instructions on how to tie an 18 inch wedding-worthy bow. Instructions

Step 1

Take your spool of ribbon and measuring tape and measure a length of 4 yards of ribbon then cut with scissors.

 Step 2

Lay your ribbon on a flat surface and loop in a zig zag pattern. Use your measuring tape to measure four loops; three 18-inch loops and one 13-inch loop. Be sure to leave about an extra four inches at the end for the tail.

 Step 3

Gather the ribbon at the center with your fingers and pinch very tightly.

 Step 4

Take a piece of floral wire and fold it in half.

 Step 5

Place the ribbon you are holding in the apex of wire and secure tightly by twisting wire 2 or 3 times.

Step 6

Pull the tails down. Fluff the smaller 13-inch loop to create the center of the bow.

 Step 7

Gently separate and shape the remaining loops.

Helpful Tips

  • You may substitute a ruler for a measuring tape.
  •  Pipe cleaners are a great option for floral wire.
  • Consider proportions; adjust the size of the bow to the size of the object to be decorated.
  • Create a decorative triangle effect on the tails. Fold the tails in half and starting from the outer edge make a single diagonal cut with scissors then open to reveal an inverted V-shape.
  •  Add glitter or floral decorations to augment your bow
  • For longer tails, cut separately and attach to the back of the bow.
