Knowing the don’t dos of a wedding is not always as clear as understanding the do’s of making a registry, inviting guests, purchasing wedding attire, selecting a location and choosing a honeymoon location, bear in mind all of these do’s come with don’ts. Some don’ts are based on common sense such as, “Don’t forget to eat something before your nuptials.” Other don’ts are based on etiquette and protocol. Read on for a few tips about wedding don’ts for your consideration.

Registry Don’ts

Do not wait until the last minute by to create your gift registry. It is not recommended to put your wedding registry information on your invitation, include this info on your website or rely on word of mouth. Do not go overboard on places to register, choosing two or three locations is ideal, ten or twenty is overboard. Don’t register for inexpensive grocery items like a jar of mustard or a tube of toothpaste but do strive for price diversity by including a mixed selection of low cost to expensive items.

Wedding Stationary Don’ts

Mail your wedding invitations out 6 to 8 weeks before the wedding and omit wedding registry information from your invitation. Do not forget to include RSVPs with your invites. Never print “No Children” on your wedding invitations, simply state the names of the persons invited on the invitation. According to etiquette expert Emily Post, send your thank you notes out no later than 3 months after the wedding. An email or phone call does not substitute for a thank you note. Do not send pre-printed thank you notes only a signature, take the time to respectfully compose a thoughtful note to show appreciation for the gift given, a personal touch is crucial. Do not forget to write thank you notes to all the people who helped with your wedding such as a close friend who hosted your shower to wedding vendors.

Wedding Gown Don’ts

Don’t buy a dress a size too small; have your dress tailored to fit your body. Do not follow a trend for fashion’s sake; buy the dress that looks great and is flattering on you, this goes a long way in enhancing your wedding day confidence. Do not feel pressured to bring friends and family when you try on wedding dresses, peer pressure is not always the best source of advice for your wedding day look.

Reception Don’ts

Don’t let guests drink and drive. Make sure guests who have over indulged alcohol have a ride home or call a cab. When creating seating arrangements, try not to allow friends or relatives who do not get along with each other to sit next to each other. Do not have a cash bar. If you cannot afford a full bar consider an alternative such as serving beer and wine or create a signature cocktail especially for your wedding.
