Bring the spirit of the ocean alive at your beach wedding reception from laid-back get-togethers in the sand to grand elegant affairs under the last golden rays of a setting sun. Beach wedding receptions offer couples a chance to celebrate with guests in an environment that is often less costly in terms of decorations and held high in regard for choice of a memorable and romantic destination. Themes for a beach wedding reception are as varied as the beaches of the world, read on for some ideas for your surfside celebration.

Hawaiian

The romantic call of the Hawaiian Islands is hard to deny, make your reception a luau, the Hawaiian word for feast. Host your reception on an actual Hawaiian island beach or evoke the essence of the islands with luau styling and ocean-inspired decorations. Give your guests leis to wear around their necks and encourage guests to dress in bright colorful attire such as Hawaiian-print shirts or flowery dresses. Make grass skirts available for hula dancing, light the reception area with tiki torches and hire a band that plays authentic Hawaiian music. Serve tropical drinks from coconuts or offer signature umbrella drinks. Feast upon traditional luau foods influenced by native, Polynesian and Asian flavors such as poi, huli huli chicken, lau lau, baked sweet potatoes, mahi mahi, kalua pua’a, pipi kaula, poke, papayas, mangos, bananas, lychee and pineapples.

Surfer

Hang ten at your surfer-inspired beach wedding reception and make wetsuits optional. Inform guests the dress code is surfer casual and encourage the wearing of board shorts, straw hats and flip flops. Use vintage longboard surfboards to serve as tables for serving food and beverages. Dish up classic beach fare such as burgers, corn dogs, fried clams and fish and chips. Supply surfers with healthy selections such as sushi or Costa Rican casado, a Spanish term for ‘married’. Plant surfboards in the sand near the reception area for guests to pose for photo opportunities. Keep the fun going with beach balls and volleyball games and hire a live band specializing in beach music.

Sandcastles

Sandcastles bring back carefree memories of childhood and add a special bit of magic to your beach wedding reception. Create a sculpture garden made of sand monuments such as the ever-classic enchanting sand castles, intertwined wedding rings and hearts with the newly-married couple’s names etched inside. Feature sandcastle centerpieces on your reception tables and give your wedding guests brightly-colored sand bucket pails and shovels or tiny fairytale castles made of sand as favors. Add to the overall sandy effect by decorating with natural beach environment items such as drift wood, sea stars and shells. Showcase your beach reception with a sandcastle-inspired wedding cake.
