Let your story begin with ‘happily ever after’ by celebrating your nuptials with a fairy tale wedding. Themes set the tone of your wedding and choosing a fairy tale for your theme sets the pace for an enchanting occasion. Fairy tales are short stories featuring elements such as magic, romance, fantastical creatures and happy endings. Read on for theme ideas for a fairy tale wedding.

Cinderella

“Fairy tales do come true,” the ultimate fairy tale wedding belonged to the story of Cinderella, a damsel who escaped a life of drudgery to marry her Prince Charming. Choose a castle location for your fairy tale setting. Infuse your wedding with touches from the Cinderella story such as arriving in a pumpkin-shaped carriage drawn by white horses or wearing crystal slippers and ‘accidentally’ losing one as you exit the chapel. Select a fantasy ballroom gown made of voluminous tulle and taffeta. Wear long white satin gloves and put your hair in an updo accented with a bridal crown or sparkly tiara lieu of a veil. Decorate in colors of baby blue and white, from the Disney version of the Cinderella story. Have your cake designed in the shape of castle with a prince and princess cake topper.

Sherwood Forest

Invoke the legendary romance of Maid Marian and Robin Hood with a Sherwood Forest theme wedding. Select a wooded location to share your vows under the shade of towering oaks and the song of birds. Hire musicians to blow bellowing hunter’s horns to echo throughout the forest or play period music to lend a festive medieval mood to the setting. Select a simple tunic gown featuring historic elements such as a peasant neck, laced bodice or velvet fabric. Wear your hair in a flattering half-up and half-down style with a wreath of flowers atop your head. Choose colors inspired by the forest. At your reception, feature a May pole replete with colorful flowing silk ribbons for dancing fun.

A Midsummer’s Night Dream

Recreate the dreamlike quality of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Have your wedding begin at twilight and select an outdoor garden location or decorate an indoor location with flowers inspired by an English garden such as tea roses and lavender. Hire musicians to play Renaissance music. Decorate nearby shrubbery and trees with clear holiday lights to lend a subtle winkling effect. Dress your flower girls in pink ballerina dresses with matching flower wreaths and fairy wings as they spread rose petals from dainty baskets. Wear an ethereal gown inspired by the fairies of Victorian Art, long, flowing and otherworldly. Adorn your hair by placing sprigs of baby’s breath in your hair or wear a floral wreath. Walk down the aisle in a pair of satin ballet slippers or go barefoot.
