Finding a bridal gown that fits like a dream is a near impossible feat, nearly all wedding dresses needs some sort of alterations, a great way to tailor your dress to fit your body type. When to Get Your Gown Altered

A good rule of thumb regarding bridal alterations is to allow three to four months before your wedding for gown alterations, the best seamstresses and tailors are often booked months in advance. Although, you can get your dressed altered closer to your wedding date, expect to pay more for alteration costs. Be warned, if you wait three months or less before your wedding before attempting alterations, the prices may exorbitantly increase, this is known as a rush fee.

Finding Someone to Alter Your Gown

Look for someone with bridal experience to alter your wedding gown, consider a wedding alterations specialist, someone who specializes in bridal gown alterations. Ask for references and get recommendations from friends and family. When searching for a seamstress or tailor to perform work on your dress, always request examples of previous bridal gown work. Inquire with the store where you purchased your dress and ask if they perform in-house alterations or if they can refer you to a good seamstress or tailor.

What Happens at a Fitting?

When attending a fitting expect the alterations expert to fit and pin your dress in the places it is too big or long or needs additional adjustment. Types of alterations include the bodice, sleeves, sides, hemlines and bra cups. After the initial pinning and measurements are completed, an estimated will be given and generally a deposit is due. Next, an appointment is scheduled for the bride to return and pick up the altered dress. When picking up the dress it is imperative to try it on immediately to ensure all alterations were performed as anticipated.

What to Bring to a Fitting

Optimize your wedding gown fitting experience by arriving prepared, it is imperative to bring and wear the exact undergarments you plan to wear on the day of your wedding. This means having the right bra, body shaping garments, slip and shoes. If you choose not to bring these items you risk your dress not fitting correctly on the day of your wedding.
