Traditional accessories for a tuxedo include bow tie, vest or cummerbund. Tuxes represent a significant investment and may be quite expensive. Renting a tuxedo is a great way to save money and look great on your wedding day.  Read on to learn more about renting a tuxedo.

Where to Begin

Choose a formal wear store or boutique that rents tuxedos. The next step is to register with your chosen location, do this about six months before your ceremony. By registering in advance, this ensures that tuxedos will be available for you and your groomsmen on your wedding day. Benefits of registering may include email updates on new styles or special discounts.

Select a Style of Tuxedo

Tuxedos come in a large variety of colors and styles such as modern, classic, casual or romantic. Select a style that coordinates with the bridal gown. Many couples like to match the tuxedos to the bridesmaid’s dresses. Be sure to bring a swatch of color of the bridesmaid’s dresses to assist with selection of the proper colors. Pick a style at least three months before your wedding.

Getting Measurements

Formal wear stores feature staff professionals to assist with measurements. Make an appointment at your formal wear establishment for measurements to be taken of the groom and groomsmen, allow about two to three months before the wedding. It is not recommended to measure by do-it-yourself as one or two inches off may result in an ill-fitting tuxedo.

Wait until a few weeks before the wedding before taking measurements of children who play a role in the wedding party such as ring bearer, this is due to the fact that growth spurts are not uncommon for youngsters.

Final Fittings

Make a final fitting appointment for everyone in the wedding party wearing a tux about two to three days before your ceremony. Everyone will need to try on their tuxedo and a professional tailor will inspect the overall fit and make last minute adjustments as necessary.

How to Return

Expect to return your tuxedo in the same condition as when you originally rented it. Take the time to thoroughly read the tuxedo rental agreement fine print regarding returns and damage such as rips, stains or burn holes.

Many tuxedo rentals locations require a tux to be returned the next day or incur additional late fees. If you are planning a destination wedding, inquire about one or two week rentals.
