PIC FOR DutiesofAttendantsYour close friend is getting married and has asked you to be one of his groomsmen, an honor reserved for best buddies. This is a role to be taken seriously as you help the groom navigate the journey towards his wedding day. When accepting a groomsman position in a wedding party there is a certain amount of responsibility and duties to be expected when saying yes. Read on to learn about the duties of a groomsman.

Support Role

Taking on a support role as groomsman may not be any different than being a good friend. As a groomsman you support the groom by always being ready to lend an ear or dissuade the groom from making any irrational or irresponsible decisions before his wedding day. Planning a wedding is often a very overwhelming or emotional process and having a good friend on stand-by ready to support you at any moment is a priceless gift.

Rehearsal

Before the actual wedding ceremony there is a rehearsal for all wedding party members to attend. Wedding rehearsals provide an opportunity for all wedding party members to practice a run-through of where everyone needs to walk and stand during the ceremony. Afterwards, the groomsmen are invited to attend the wedding rehearsal dinner as well.

Tuxedo Fittings

Groomsmen are expected to pay for their tuxedo rental much like the bridesmaids who pay for their dresses. Tuxedo fittings usually occur at a tuxedo rental shop. While at the store, a salesperson or tailor will take your measurements including hip, chest arm, inseam, neck, waist and shoe size. These measurements are used to find a tuxedo pant and jacket for you to try on for size. The jacket should fit in such a way that allows free movement of your arms and pants trouser should be even with the top of your shoes from the back and rest on the top of the shoes in the front with no slack or folds.

Bachelor Party

One of the most fun pre-wedding events for the groomsmen is the bachelor party, traditionally hosted by the best man but the all the groomsmen help split the costs. The bachelor party is intended to be a festive gathering for the groom and his close friends to celebrate the groom’s upcoming nuptials. It is a last huzzah for the groom as he transitions from single life to marriage. Duties of a groomsman at a bachelor party include making sure the party does not get out of hand and that the groom gets home safely.

Day of Wedding

On the day of the wedding, the groomsmen will have many active roles. Before the ceremony begins a groomsman might be asked to help usher guests to their seats. The groomsmen commonly escort the bridesmaids and stand up for the groom at the altar. Groomsmen will be asked to pose for after-wedding photographs and to help out as needed. At the wedding reception, the groomsmen might be asked to dance with the bridesmaids and help decorate the honeymoon getaway car.
