One of the wedding party roles to fulfill is that of usher, a person who assists with the seating of guests. When selecting ushers, couples look for persons who are friendly, supportive and available to help make your wedding guests feel welcome. Traditionally, ushers are young unmarried males but modern times dictate ushers may be a man or woman of any age or marital status willing to assist with this essential wedding responsibility. Read on to learn more about what an usher does at a wedding.

The primary duty of the wedding usher is to assist with seating logistics at the wedding and help as needed. Additional duties of an usher may include managing gifts brought to the wedding, helping with parking, providing programs, directing traffic and giving directions. As a member of the wedding party, ushers are expected to attend the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. Other activities involving usher attendance include the bachelor party or bachelorette party and the wedding reception. Ushers may also be asked to participate in wedding photography sessions before or during the wedding.

Wedding Guests Arrivals

Ushers arrive before guests so that they can review special seating arrangements and prepare to greet each guest as they arrive. Before seating guests, it is best advised for ushers to review the order of seating such as guests then grandparents then parents of the marrying couple. As a rule of etiquette, elderly guests are seated first.

Ushers should ask each guest if they are present for the bride or grooms side of the family. Persons will be seated depending on their response, the bride’ side is on the left and the groom’s side is to the right. An usher offers their right arm to female guests and walks to the left of male guests and asks couples to follow behind as the usher directs them to their seats.

Post Ceremony Duties

After the ceremony, ushers dismiss the wedding attendees one row at a time, this helps create an orderly environment for guests as they depart for the reception. The usher may stand in the middle of the aisle and gesture to each row when it is time to leave. Ushers may also be asked to provide directions to the reception.

The mode of wedding attire for ushers is usually assigned by the marrying couple to coordinate with the rest of the wedding party. Ushers are expected to be responsible for renting or purchasing the proper attire.
