LL0000A204Congratulations on your engagement, the journey to getting married is an unforgettable life milestone experience. Take a moment for a deep breath, allow the excitement of reality to soak in then share with friends and family and roll up your sleeves for the task of wedding planning. The big question is where to begin? Read on to learn more about first steps in planning a wedding.

Brainstorm Wedding Ideas

Meet with your fiancée to brainstorm ideas for your dream wedding. Discuss what is important to each other and how you would like to share with friends and family. Questions to ask each other include, “What date to choose for our wedding”, “Do we want a small or large wedding?” and “Formal or informal wedding?” Create a Pinterest account and make pins of your favorite wedding ideas.

Make a Budget

Determine the budget for your wedding by gathering your financial resources. Where is the funding for your wedding coming? Will it be from your own pocket, parents or a little of both? Make a list of priority items to purchase for your wedding such as venue, dress, photos and reception. Allocate funds to each item as you deem necessary, if desired to save money look for sales and off-season rates.

Choose Your Wedding Party

The average size of a wedding party is eight including best man, maid of honor, groomsmen and bridesmaids. Additional attendants to think about include ring bearers, flower girls and ushers. Choose your wedding party members with care as each position requires a certain amount of responsibility and/or time commitment.

Start Your Guest List

Decide who you want to invite to your wedding. Keep the size of your wedding in mind as you compose your guest list. Guests to invite may include parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, close friends, extended family and colleagues.

Research Vendors

Start collecting names of vendors you would like to work with for your wedding. These may include services for important essentials such as photographers, florists, caterers, cake bakers, entertainment and event rentals. If you desire a wedding planner, this should be an immediate priority. Attend a bridal show for ideas and to make contacts.

 Reserve Your Venue

One of your initial wedding planning tasks should be reserving a venue for your ceremony and reception. Decide when and where you want to get married before selecting your venue. Popular wedding venues fill up fast, be prepared for flexibility in your schedule if the date you want is not available or have a backup venue.
