Portrait of woman smiling.Deciding to have plastic surgery is a big step especially when are planning a wedding at the same time. Before taking the plunge understand not all plastic surgeons are alike. Be selective when choosing a plastic surgeon by educating yourself on questions to ask and what to know. Read on to learn more about choosing a plastic surgeon.

Verify the surgeon’s credentials.

Inquire if your surgeon is board certified, this is important because there are many types of board certification. Surprisingly, not all board certifications feature the same type of training. Specifically, look for the American Board of Plastic Surgery certification. Go to the ABPS website and use their search tool to verify board certification. The American Board of Plastic Surgery requires very stringent prerequisites to be met before passing certification. This includes a minimum of three years of general surgery and two years of plastic surgery training.

Check out the surgeon’s record.

Take the time to learn about your surgeon’s record. The record contains an account of any disciplinary actions and offers verification of a license to practice medicine in your state. This information is helpful in revealing any settlements or actions that may be of concern. The records may be attained from your local state board online or through postal mail depending on the issuing state

Learn if the surgeon has hospital privileges.

Hospital privileges are particularly important if your procedure will be performed as an outpatient. The reason is you want to be sure you will be admitted to a hospital in case of complications. Hospitals perform background checks on all doctors with hospital privileges.

What kind of questions to ask during consultation.

Interviewing your plastic surgeon during the initial consultations is critical to the selection process. Spend time going over all your questions and developing a repertoire with your plastic surgeon. You want to feel comfortable with the person who is going to change your appearance. Questions to ask may include but are not limited to the following:

How long have you been performing plastic surgery procedures?

How many times have you performed the procedure?

Do you have any before and after photographs?

May I have references of former patients you have performed this procedure on?

Questions to ask about the surgical procedure.

Make a list of questions to ask your surgeon about the surgery procedure. Include questions such as:

How long will the surgery last?

How long is the recovery period before I am discharged?

Where will the procedure take place?

What are the risks associated with this type of surgery?
